Staying Safe on the Road with Hyundai

Hyundai SmartSense is an intelligent suite of safety and convenience features that enhance the driving experience with brilliant safety and assistance technologies. Using advanced algorithms, sonar, radars, and cameras, SmartSense monitors and manages internal vehicle conditions and surrounding external input to assist in safe navigation and parking. All new Hyundais are SmartSense models, helping drivers stay safe without compromising personal style and preferred model choice.

Hyundai Safety Features

While this excellent suite of features comprises intelligent, comprehensive technology, drivers should still execute best driving practices and not rely entirely on system activation.

Visibility Management

Acting as a supplementary assistant, the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection helps prevent forward collisions by detecting and warning the driver of vehicles or pedestrians in the path ahead. Drivers should brake and act accordingly, but the system may automatically brake to prevent collision if action isn’t taken. Upon activating the turn signal, if a vehicle is detected in your blind spot, the system will alert the driver and may apply the brake to prevent merging into the next lane using Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist. Additionally, while changing lanes, the Blind-Spot View Monitor will activate a display of a live video feed of the lane to give a visual of the blind spot through the side-view mirror camera. High Beam Assist can turn on and off automatically when driving on dark or poorly lit roads to manage visibility and courtesy towards other oncoming vehicles.

Lane Management

Hyundai SmartSense helps keep your vehicle between the lines with Lane Following Assist and Lane Keeping Assist. Lane Keeping Assist helps the driver by tracking the lane markers through the front camera, keeping the car centered within the lane while providing warnings and alerts to prevent your vehicle from leaving the lane if no signal is used. The Hyundai SmartSense system will correct the steering wheel to keep the car within the lane automatically as needed.

Attention Management

To help prevent drowsy or distracted driving, Hyundai SmartSense detects your driving patterns using the Driver Attention Warning to monitor whether your behavior is safe. An alert and warning are issued to announce whether the Driver Attention Warning has detected behavior that reflects sleepy or inattentive driving.

Parking Management

Navigating parking lots and getting in and out of street parking can be stressful, but Hyundai SmartSense offers assistance to make it easy. Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist uses sensors to monitor and detect as you reverse out of a parking spot, alerting the driver to oncoming traffic approaching from the left or right. To prevent rear passengers from being left in the vehicle, Rear Occupant Alert and Advanced Rear Occupant Alert assist in scanning the backseat to detect children or pets and provide a reminder on the instrument cluster for the driver to check for occupants. If an occupant is left in the car while the Advanced Rear Occupant Alert is activated, the Hyundai SmartSense system will honk the horn, flash the lights, and send a notification to the driver’s smartphone using Bluelink®. When the vehicle is parked, if another car approaches from behind, such as when getting out of the vehicle in a parallel parking space, Safe Exit Warning and Safe Exit Assist will activate to warn the driver of the approaching vehicle and override the Electronic Child Safety Lock as needed.

Hyundai Convenience Features

The Hyundai SmartSense system isn’t just about safety; it’s about making drivers' lives easier with convenient features on the road and when parking.

Driving Convenience

While cruising along at a set speed, Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go helps to manage the distance between the driver and the car ahead. If the vehicle slows down to a stop, SCC will activate again when the driver ahead moves, so long as it’s within three seconds. Highway Driving Assist works with Smart Cruise Control or Lane Following Assist to help keep your car centered within the lane but also help the vehicle maintain the correct speed using highway and GPS data. Highway Driving Assist II takes this further by automatically changing lanes when the turn signal is activated above 37 MPH. The system will also help maintain distance from vehicles driving too close, entering the lane, or cutting the driver off. When navigating downhill with Downhill Braking Control, the Hyundai SmartSense system will assist in reducing speeds to manage steering easier, especially on busy streets or during inclement weather.

Parking Convenience

Parallel parking is difficult for many, but Hyundai SmartSense assists by relieving many common errors made when attempting to do so. Surround View Monitor displays a birds-eye view of the Hyundai SmartSense-equipped vehicle to give a full scope of the surrounding area, detecting vehicles and other obstacles at the rear and sides. Remote Smart Parking Assist allows drivers to park their cars within a standard parking lot space without needing to be in the car, with just a simple press and hold of the Smart Key button. For those who genuinely struggle with parallel parking, Premium Remote Smart Parking Assist is a saving grace, as the system can also do so for them. The Parking Distance Warning uses ultrasonic sensors to monitor any objects or vehicles in front or at the back of the vehicle that may be out of sight, located on the front and rear bumpers. Hyundai SmartSense helps to prevent backing up into barriers or other cars while in a parallel parking spot and reversing with Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist.
